Great Ocean Road - Day 1 Robe

One of SA's oldest, Robe is a very nice, rather old fashioned, seaside town.  Our motel room is equally old fashioned but adequate with a fridge, kettle and toaster.

The lady on reception recommended the local fish bar which was take-away only and so having settled into our room we stopped by to check what time they stopped frying as we were keen to explore the area and wanted to ensure we were back in time.

Firstly we stopped to watch some galahs, very comical birds.

Then we went to the harbour area where there were a few people fishing.  These guys were just heading out and one of them had just jumped a massive distance from the boat to the bank - no one, including his mates, can imagine how he did it.

Although we are not yet on the Great Ocean Road (we're still in SA and it officially starts in Victoria, at Peterborough) the scenery is spectacular and best of all we had the place completely to ourselves.

I was able to stick a 10 stopper on and try a few arty-farty long exposures - not too sure they work!

I loved these little winkle like creatures - they looked like blueberries.

On to the Obelisk, erected in 1852 to assist navigators find the safe entrance to Guichen Bay.

And the old jail (1861) with its exercise yard and cells.

On the way home the boats on the turquoise water looked lovely, but the colours haven't come out very well.

Back at the fish and chip shop for 19:30 and the queue was enormous.  We established that we wanted something similar to cod, ie. white and flaky and their version is Gummy Shark - known locally as flake.  Having placed our order we spent the next 20 mins or so (everything is cooked fresh) chatting to an 80yo from Sydney who was visiting her daughter, the newly appointed primary school head.  The fish when we finally got it was very nice, but not as good as good old north Atlantic cod.
