Bits and Bobs

The next couple of days we didn’t do much because of the heat, although we wandered down by the river one evening and saw a few birds at another reserve.

Spoonbill

Pelican

This is Geelong's Library, also known as The Haemorrhoid by those that dislike its design.  Actually its quite an amazing place, with a great viewing terrace on the top floor.

You can just see the skyscrapers of Melbourne on the horizon.

As the Regatta was still going on, we headed down to the beach/marina area for a closer look but when we got there all the yachts were miles away, so just a couple of randoms.

We revisited the Serendip Sanctuary when it was cooler, but there wasn’t much else to see.  A few different pictures of mostly the same birds as I’ve already shown – but being cooler they were far livelier today so harder to shoot.

An even more ruffled Heron.

And a few new ones

Australian Bustard

This might be “only” a Crested Pigeon, but the colours on its wingtips were amazing.

Mummy Emu with 3 chicks (from an enormous distance across the water, so probably very fuzzy)

This was described as a Thicknee but I'm not convinced as the markings around the neck look different.

I’m not sure if the line on the twigs was the high water mark, or what, but it was very level across them all.

As we were wandering around a huge flock of birds flew over us (I didn’t manage a decent shot) and later we found them by the lake – some kind of geese but there must have been over 1000.

I think this is a different kind of spoonbill from the other night as the beak isn't so dark (or maybe it's a juvenile).

I have to admit I was surprised to see that events like this were still legal in Australia!

There was great excitement one day as the roads were closed around us for a cycle race, which went past in about 5 seconds.
